‘2003 Davis Cup defeat to Hewitt was one of my toughest losses,’ says Federer

Melbourne, Sep 16 : Swiss tennis star Roger Federer insists that his 2003 Davis Cup failure against Lleyton Hewitt, having led by two sets and 5-2, was one of his “toughest losses”.
Federer’s comment comes after he failed to convert two match points in his US Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic that condemned the 16-time major winner to his first year in the past nine without a grand slam title.
“People might think Djokovic was tough, but it was nothing compared to the loss back in ‘03, just because I thought I should have won so bad. And today, I’m not 22 years old any more, I’m 30, so I take losses much easier,” the Age quoted Federer, as saying.
“But back then, it was a very tough loss for me. But still the atmosphere was incredible on Rod Laver Arena and it was a privilege to be part of such a great match and a great tie,” he added.

Davis Cup: Sugita stuns Somdev to put Japan ahead

Tokyo, Sep 16 : Yuichi Sugita produced an amazing mix of scintillating power and precision to outwit India's No. 1 Somdev Devvarman 6-3,6-4,7-5 and give Japan a 1-0 lead on the opening day of their Davis Cup World Group play-off here Friday. Rohan Bopanna will be playing the second singles against Japan No. 1 Kei Nishikori to try and put India on an even keel.
Sugita, the lowest ranked among the Japanese team at 175, was the surprise pick for the opening singles, but the youngster vindicated his captain Eiji Takeuchi's confidence.
Egged on by a sizeable crowd in hot conditions, the 22-year-old not only lived up to his promise by stunning a the Indian who is a Tour regular and ranked 65th but in fact, reduced the contest into a one-sided affair.
Sugita, who had lost to the Indian in their only previous meeting at the Aptos Challenger last year, served with purpose and was not broken even once over the two and a half hour battle. Astonishingly, he won all critical games at love. The only time his serve came under pressure was in the fourth game of the first set when he was down 30-40 but wriggled out with ease.
Sugita, who celebrates his 23rd birthday Sunday, pounced aggressively on the returns. He was clearly an ace up against the Indian, anticipating well and unleashing his well-directed grounstrokes, especially the forehand shots, that invariably left the Indian stranded at the baseline.
The sheer pace and depth of the Sugita's strokes forced Somdev helplessly pushing his returns short for the Japanese to hit winners unerringly.
Somdev also struggled with his first serve and hi shoulder seemed to trouble him. He took a medical time-out in the third game of the third set and again needed treatment during the changeover before the last game of the match.
Sugita, too, suffered cramps in the third set but stuck it out to see the match through.
The Japanese needed just a break each in the three sets to make sure that there is no coming back by the Indian.
Sugita had early breaks in the first two sets to go 3-1 up. He hardly allowed any room for Somdev to extend the rallies. His punishing his forehand gave him quick opportunities to finish off the points. Somdev did try to shift gears by attacking Japanese's forehand and also came to the net, but Sugita was simply irrepressible. He confidently went for the lines and produced some breathtaking angles to keep up the pressure.
Somdev did put up a fight in the third set but in the eleventh game at 15-30, Sugita produced two stunning forehand winners to earn a break point. A shanked forehand return from the Indian gave him the break and Sugita served out the match without losing a point.

Federer arrives in Australia for Davis Cup tie

Canberra, Sep 14  The winner of a record 16 grand slam singles titles, Federer arrived down under following his emotional five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in a US Open semi-final Sunday.
He now only has two days to adjust to the grass courts at Royal Sydney Golf Club in Australia, before the World Group playoff tie.
Federer looked relaxed in a practice session at the tie's venue, the 30-year-old training in both singles and doubles against practice partners in a possible preview of his participation over the weekend.
"Well, usually we never have that much time to get used to the grass anyway, so that is kind of how we have to do it every year for the grass season, anyway, so I am kind of used to it," Federer told ABC Sports Wednesday. "The grass (here) is pretty good. It wasn't center court now, so I don't know how that plays, but we will see how it goes tomorrow."
Meanwhile, Australian tennis star and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt said the limited preparation time will not hold up Federer.
"For a freak like Roger, it doesn't matter," Hewitt said. "I haven't seen a lot that Roger hasn't been able to do, so he is as close to Superman as it comes."
Federer is expected to play two singles rubbers and could also team up with Swiss No. 2 ranked singles player Stanislas Wawrinka for Saturday's doubles. However, Wawrinka Tuesday revealed he was still getting over a leg injury he suffered at the US Open.
Swiss captain Severin Luthi backed his star player to handle the short preparation time.
"He is a great champion, we know that, and for sure it is always better if you have more days but I am sure that he can handle this," Luthi said.
He was also confident Wawrinka would be fit for the tie despite a niggling leg injury the world No. 19 brought over from America.
"They are used to playing with small injuries, for sure it is not a big thing, so I am not concerned about that," Luthi said.  Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer arrived in Australia and had
his first practice Wednesday for the Davis Cup starting Friday.

‘Djokovic is having the greatest year in the history of tennis,’ says McEnroeLondon, Sep 14: American legend John McEnroe has hailed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic after the Serbian defeated Rafael Nadal to in the US Open men's singles title and become just the sixth in the open era to win three Slams in the same calendar year.
It was also the 24-year-old's 64th win of a remarkable season that has seen him lose just two matches and win 10 titles which includes victories in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade, Madrid, Rome and Montreal as well as his three Slams.
"Djokovic is having the greatest year in the history of our sport, there's no doubt about it. He bewildered Nadal," the Guardian quoted McEnroe, as saying.
"I've never seen Nadal look as if he doesn't know what to do - and even on clay in Rome Djokovic made him look like that."
"Wimbledon was where he separated himself and took himself to a whole new level. He beat Nadal six times in one year and, considering the year Nadal had in 2010, that's pretty hard to do," he added.

Davis Cup: Federer will still fire in spite of short preparation: Hewitt

Davis Cup: Federer will still fire in spite of short preparation: HewittMelbourne, Sep. 13 : Australian tennis star Lleyton Hewitt believes that a short preparation time won''t hurt Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer heading into the Davis Cup World Group playoff tie in Sydney this week.
Swiss team management revealed on Tuesday that Federer would arrive in Sydney on Wednesday, just two days before the tie starts.
"For a freak like Roger, it doesn''t matter," Hewitt told reporters on Tuesday.
"I haven''t seen a lot that Roger hasn''t been able to do, so he''s as close to Superman as it comes," he added.
Hewitt was pleased with his physical condition after missing the US Open through injury and said he was prepared to play both singles and doubles if required.
Switzerland''s second-ranked player Stanislas Wawrinka revealed he was battling a foot injury he suffered at the US Open, but hoped to be fit for Friday.
Switzerland boast the two highest ranked singles players in the grass court tie, with Federer at No. 3 and Wawrinka at 14.
Asked what it will take for Australia to win the tie, Hewitt said: "I''ll have to play a lot better than my ranking I guess, 188 in the world probably won''t do it."

Djokovic beats Nadal in epic US Open final

Djokovic beats Nadal in epic US Open finalNew York, Sep. 13 : Serbian Novak Djokovic defeated Spaniard Rafael Nadal in an epic U S Open final on Monday.
Djokovic beat Nadal in four sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, but it was more like a five-setter in its intensity.
According to The Telegraph, the match lasted four hours and ten minutes.
In each of the three sets, Nadal broke Djokovic's serve early on and gave himself the chance of taking control. On each occasion, Djokovic broke straight back again, wrestling the mighty Spaniard back with a focus that can only stem from absolute self-belief.
There were so many extraordinary moments in this final, so many apparently unreturnable shots that were sent back with interest.
Nadal, serving for 3-0, had game point thrice and break point five times. And then, in a rally that just kept giving, Djokovic retrieved three lost causes until a disbelieving Nadal finally dumped a smash into the net.
Nadal will go away listed as the loser of this match yet he was almost as immovable as Djokovic. He did perhaps start a little slowly, making only 58 per cent of his first serves in the first set and struggling to find the necessary depth with his backhand.
As it stretched past the three-hour mark, one might have expected the players to become weary and erratic. Instead they achieved a zen-like focus, entering that glassy-eyed place that athletes call "the zone".
In some of their exchanges, you wondered whether we would we would have to wait until dawn for one of them to miss.
At the peaks of the performance, points were constructed with a skill and ingenuity that made any normal tennis match look crude, like a wooden shack alongside a cathedral.
This final was a magnificent conclusion to what has been a flawed yet never less than fascinating tournament.

Samantha Stosur upsets Serena to win US Open

New York, Sep 12 : Australia's Samantha Stosur beat Serena Williams to win the US Open Championship and her first Grand Slam tennis title Sunday.
The 27-year-old Stosur become the first Australian woman in 31 years to capture a major singles championship.
Ninth-seeded Stosur overpowered the 28th-seeded Williams 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes.
She is the third women's player to capture her first major this year after China's Li Na took the French Open title and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic won Wimbledon, Xinhua reported.
"I think I had one of my best days," Stosur said. "This was a dream of mine to be here one day, and I don't really know what to say and how I'm feeling."
Williams, whose previous appearance at the US Open in a 2009 semifinal loss ended with a foot fault and a penalty point when she threatened a lineswoman, had another controversy in store in Sunday's final.
She lost a point, and a service game, in the second set because she yelled "Come on!" before the point was over. She faced a break point on her serve when she slammed a forehand that Stosur barely tipped as it shot past her.
Match umpire Eva Asderaki cited Williams for a verbal hindrance because she shouted before Stosur had a chance to swing at the ball. The point, and first game of the second set, went to Stosur.
Williams had a contentious discussion with chair umpire that included her saying, "If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way."
"I get a code violation for this? I express who I am. We're in America," Williams said later after the awarding ceremony in an on-court interview.
"I hit a winner, but I guess it didn't count," Williams said. "But it wouldn't have mattered in the end."
Talking about what she said to the umpire in the post match conference, Williams said: "I don't even remember what I said. It was just so intense out there. It's the final for me, and I was -- I guess I'll see it on YouTube. I was just in the zone. I think everyone, when they play, they kind of zone out kind of thing. I don't know."
Williams made a brief comeback after the controversy, breaking Stosur's serve in the next game and winning her next two service games to take a 3-2 lead. Stosur, who won the final 12 points of the first set, responded by winning the final four games of the match.
Stosur played 147 games in the first six rounds of the tournament compared with 103 for Williams, and was part of a women's Grand Slam record when she and Maria Kirilenko played a 17-15 tiebreaker, in which Stosur lost, in the fourth round,
Williams, who had not lost a set in the tournament before the final, was the pre-tournament favorite to win her 14th Grand Slam singles title.
The 29-year-old American was playing the US Open for the first time since 2009 and was coming back from two operations on her foot and blood clots in her lungs, returning to the courts in June after more than a year on the sidelines.

Oz PM, sports legends hail Stosur’s US Open success

Oz PM, sports legends hail Stosur’s US Open successSydney, Sep 12 : Australian tennis star Samantha Stosur's US Open women's singles title win is being rated as one of the country's greatest sporting achievements.
Stosur became the first Australian woman to win a grand slam singles title in 31 years when she defeated Serena Williams in the final at New York's Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday.
The 27-year-old produced the match of her life to beat Serena 6-2, 6-3, in an hour and 13 minutes.
The win makes Stosur her country's first female Grand Slam champion since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won Wimbledon in 1980 and the first Australian woman to win the US Open women's singles crown since Margaret Court Smith in 1973.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement that the "great achievement shows that the future of Australian tennis is on the rise."
"She has shown great determination and skill to win the US Open and everyone involved with tennis in Australia will be celebrating with her today," the Herald Sun quoted Gillard, as saying.
Goolagong-Cawley said that Stosur's achievement would inspire future generations of Australian female tennis players.
"It's just a wonderful day for women's tennis. It's great for Australian tennis," Goolagong-Cawley said.
Australian tennis coach Roger Rasheed said that Stosur's performance was almost perfect.
"It was about the purest performance that you can have in a Grand Slam and this is about as daunting as it gets. It would have been the biggest occasion of Sam's life, but she came out played as relaxed as she could possibly play, though she probably had butterflies inside," Rasheed said.
"To think she hadn't played on centre court for the whole tournament, that she had played the longest tie-break and the longest match in history leading into this ... it's thoroughly deserved," he added.
Former Australian tennis player Mark Philippoussis tweeted: "Amazing performance congrats to Sam Stosur ... so proud of her."
Formula One driver Mark Webber tweeted: "Sam Stosur what a effort!! You can be extremely proud of that one that's for sure.. Really enjoyed the silent crowd!! super!!"
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath tweeted: "A huge congratulations to Sam Stosur on winning the US Open. That is an incredible effort. Well done Sam :)"
Former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne tweeted: "Sam Stosur wins US open - awesome effort, well done!!!"
