Boxing hero Mayweather, a softie and a realist at heart

London, Sep. 16 : He may be known as one of the world’s best boxers currently, but at heart, American pugilist Floyd Mayweather is a softie and a realist. He likes to switch off his sports-related ego, and would like nothing better than to be remembered for teaching his kids to be responsible and respectful human beings. Asked what he would like his legacy to be, the Daily Mail quoted Mayweather as saying: “My long-term ambition is to be remembered for teaching my sons and daughters to be respectful, responsible human beings.”
That may seem a touch ironic to those who have felt the rough edge of Mayweather’s tongue, but he explains: “Sometimes I contradict myself, but we all do. We’re only human,” adding with typical mischief: “Except, that I’m the king of the ring.”
Commenting on the fact of him throwing and waving around 100 dollar bills, Mayweather says: “I make money, but money doesn’t make my life. Yeah I’ve got a few Rolls-Royces, but whatever I earn, is there to be spent. It’s up to each person to choose how to live their life. Some like to be relaxed and quiet. Me, I’m fully energised and while I’m here for my one time on earth, I want to have fun.”
“You gotta make the most of every minute,” he adds.
That brings him back to his kids.
“If you want them to be really successful, you have to make sure they go at something from very early on. I played a bit of football and basketball, and yes, I could have been good at any sport. But I never lived more than a block from a boxing gym, and for that, I give thanks. That’s why I like my gyms to be dirty and scruffy. It’s part of what I am,” Mayweather says.
On rumors of a second marriage being round the corner, Mayweather says: “Maybe, I do like being settled with someone who doesn’t judge me, just supports me for what I am.”
This surprisingly romantic Mayweather is still in mode when he discusses his professional life after boxing.
The movie industry looms larger in his thinking than fight promoting, but when you ask him to name his favourite film it’s not Rocky or The Terminator.
“I love The Notebook. When you get old, what could be more beautiful than a man and a woman in love holding hands as they both die. That way, neither of you will ever be lonely,” he says.

Cook seeks to end series with India on a high

Cardiff (Wales), Sep. 16 (ANI): England cricket captain Alastair Cook has said that his side would try to seal the ongoing ODI series against India with a win in the final game, in Cardiff on Friday. Cook said his side’s approach has not changed and they are concentrating on one game at a time, and practicing hard for the last match.
“Yeah, no change really, it’s another game to try and win for England and, the way we’ve practiced over the last two days, we’ve been very proud of that. We’re a very young side trying to make progress and this is another game on that step,” he said.
Cook said that a lot of improvements are needed in the English team to make them an effective side. He said he was fortunate as a captain to have taken the right decisions at the right time, and said that he was enjoying leading the side.
“Yeah, it’s been a good start. I’m very happy at the way the lads are taking to me as captain. They all pour into the ideas and as I said, it’s going to take a while for these things we want to work on, to get to the standard we want,” he said.
Cook said that while the ODI series has seen some keen contests between the two teams, it was England’s exceptional performance in the Test series that gave them the winning momentum.
Cook was also all praise for Rahul Dravid, who will retire from the ODI format after Friday’s game.
“Yeah, he’s scored 10,000 runs in both forms of the game and is a stalwart of Indian cricket. He’s a fantastic player who’s managed to adapt his game to every surface. He is an all-time great and a fantastic player,” Cook said.
England lead the ODI series against India 2-0, seeking to end the series unbeaten after winning the Test series 4-0, and also winning the solitary Twenty20 game between the two sides.

Juan Mata backs ‘misfiring’ Torres to score big in 2011-12 season

London, Sep 16 : Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has predicted that his teammate Fernando Torres will prove his goal-scoring prowess has not faded when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. “I believe Fernando is still the same player he was before - nothing has changed. He is a great player who has demonstrated he can score lot of goals,” the Daily Mirror quoted Mata, as saying.
“Everybody goes through phases when it doesn’t happen for them and that is what Fernando is doing now. But this will be his season. It’s just a question of time,” he added.
Torres has scored just one goal in 21 games since his 50 million pound move from Liverpool in January.
Earlier, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas had said that he was willing to axe Torres from his starting line-up should the striker continue to misfire.

Flintoff marooned in Oz jungle for Discovery Channel’s ‘Alone In The Wild’

London, Sept 16 : Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff and Jason Gardiner have starred in Discovery Channel’s new series ‘Alone In The Wild’. The 33-year-old former cricketer and the 39-year-old choreographer were marooned alone in the lush jungles of Australia for the series starting next month.
“I was speaking to the psychologist before I left and she asked if I was afraid of making a fool of myself in public. I said, ‘You obviously haven’t done your homework on me,” the Daily Express quoted Flintoff as saying.
According to Day and Night, the ‘Dancing On Ice’ judge Gardiner is said to have had a “life-defining” experience from his time in Belize.
“I realised just how reliant we are on technology,” Gardiner said.
“Now from 8pm every night my mobile is off and I don’t go on the computer and I figure if I lose out on a job because I didn’t answer my phone it wasn’t meant to be,” he added.

London, Sept 16  : Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be too proud of his possessions, including his looks, with reports saying that the Portuguese footballer claimed that people are the "jealous" of his rich and lavish lifestyle.
"People are envious of me because I''m rich, handsome and a great player. There''s no other explanation," the New York Daily News quoted Ronaldo, as saying following his team''s 1-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.
His arrogant comments come in response to a reporter''s questions about the insults Ronaldo was subjected to throughout the game.
During a Euro 2012 qualifier last week, fans shouted "Messi, Messi" (as in Lionel Messi, Ronaldo''s archrival and the world''s greatest soccer player) every time the Portuguese international touched the ball.
Ronaldo also commented on match referee Oddvar Moen and his colleagues.

Mancini blames 'nerves' for City's unimpressive Champions League debut

London, Sep 15   Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has blamed "nerves" as his team drew 1-1 with Napoli in their Champions League debut. The Italian, who was watched by his father Aldo Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, hoped that his team can be better in the next match against Bayern Munich.
"We can do better in Munich. Bayern Munich are a fantastic team but we have a team that can win everywhere," Mancini was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.
On the match against the Italian outfit, Mancini said: "We lost a stupid goal; a team like us cannot concede a goal like that. It was a first (game) for us and in the end I'm happy."

Amir Khan calls Mayweather a ‘chicken’

London, September 15 : British Muslim world light-welterweight champion Amir Khan has called American rival Floyd Mayweather a ‘chicken’ as Mayweather has repeatedly backed off from fighting him. Khan has been trying his best to persuade Mayweather for a face off but for reasons unknown Mayweather has been avoiding it for sometime.
Khan will be defending his WBA and IBF world titles in December against Lamont Petersen but is anxious to fight Mayweather, who at one point of time also avoided Manny Pacquiao.
So much so that Khan has been quoted calling Mayweather a ‘chicken’. “All Floyd does is pick fights that he knows he will win. I thought world championship boxing was about proving who is the best but if he keeps turning his back on me how can he still say he is the best?”, he added.
He further said, “I will fight anyone put in front of me but there seems to be a lot of boxers who talk a good fight but when push comes to shove they won''t get in the ring with me.”
Although Mayweather will be facing WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas on Saturday, it seems very unlikely that he would face Khan anytime soon.
This will be Mayweather’s 40 straight unbeaten bout.

Surprised Ojha not playing Test cricket: Surrey manager

London, Sep 13   Surrey manager Chris Adams is surprised that Pragyan Ojha has been left out of the Indian cricket Test squad and predicts that the left-arm spinner would play 100 tests for the country, Ojha took six for 42 in Surrey's innings-and-126-run victory over Derbyshire in three days at The Oval. The win promoted the county to LV County Championship Division One. Ojha finished with match figures of 10 for 90 to spearhead Surrey's drive towards their fourth successive championship win.
Surrey were surprised when they were able to secure Ojha's services following a call-up to India's squad for The Oval Test.
"It's not for me to comment on India's selections but I'm amazed he's not playing Test cricket," Adams was quoted as saying in espncricinfo.
"I strongly believe he will play 100 Tests for India, from what I've seen. I may be hitting high, but he's a wonderful bowler with wonderful skills. I expect him in the next six months to break into the India team and be a permanent fixture."
Ojha has proved to be the signing of the season, taking 24 wickets at 12.95 runs each as Surrey have wrested a top-two spot with four successive championship victories.

Indian F1 Grand Prix fears eased, Jaypee ready to pay tax bill: Report

London, Sep 15: Fears that next month's inaugural Indian Formula One Grand Prix at Greater Noida's Buddh International Circuit could be scrapped due to tax issues have reportedly been eased by the race's organizers, the Jaypee Sports International (JPSI). Speculation that India's tax authorities were unwilling to grant F1 teams a tax exemption on their equipment, on the basis they do not consider the October 30 race to be of national importance, had thrown the race into uncertainty.
However, the JPSI have now said that they are ready to step in and pick up any tax costs the teams incur, Sky Sports reports.
"JPSI has full support from the government, the sports ministry and the customs department for the F1 event scheduled for October this year. We have an in-principle approval from the customs department for creating a customs bonded area for F1 equipment that will be temporarily imported to India," JPSI chief executive Sameer Gaur said in a statement.
"If required, as per the law of the land, JPSI will pay customs duties and taxes etc for the temporary import of equipment. The estimated value of this equipment is about 150 crore rupees and the final duty payable on this will be approximately eight crore rupees," he added.

Liverpool orders probe into player’s ‘9/11 not a terror attack’ tweet

London, Sept 14 : Liverpool Football Club has ordered investigations into striker Nathan Eccleston comment's on Twitter that suggested the September 11 attacks were not the work of terrorists. Twenty-year-old Eccleston, who has almost 40,000 followers, made the comment on Twitter on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in the United States.
"I aint going to say attack don''t let the media make u believe that was terrorist that did it," he wrote.
He also made a reference to O. T. I. S., which can mean `Only the Illuminati Succeed.'
The tweet followed another posting in which he called the attack an `accident,' the Daily Mail reports.
"R. I. P all 9/11 victims my thoughts are with their family''s and all those that was affected by this tragic accident!" Eccleston wrote.
Eccleston later removed the Tweet, the report said.
The Club has now launched an investigation into his Twitter activity.
According to the paper, senior club officials have informed Nathan Eccleston that they are undertaking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding these postings.

Swann aims to be ‘more grown up and mature’ for England Twenty20 captaincy

London, Sep 15: England off-spinner Graeme Swann has admitted that he must grow up and stop acting the joker after being named as the captain for the two-match Twenty20 series against West Indies. Swann has been appointed despite his claim that he is too immature and too much of a comedian to take on the responsibility of leadership.
"It's a Twenty20 series with a lot of young lads so I'll have to change the way I am from the Test side. I'm very much the joker in the Test team, I'm there for a stupid quip at the end of the session," the Sun quoted Swann, as saying.
"With this Twenty20 side, I'll naturally have to be more grown up and mature about things. But I don't intend to be deadly serious and change too much. I believe a fairly high-spirited approach has made me the cricketer I am," he added.
The 32-year-old will lead the national team for the first time in the two Twenty20s, which are scheduled for September 23 and 25 at The Oval.
He was named captain as regular captain Stuart Broad and vice-captain Eoin Morgan were unavailable due to shoulder injuries.

Four associate members to fight for spot in 2015 World Cup: ICC

"A new 50-over League be introduced which will serve as the qualifying program for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015."LODNON: International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a new system of qualifying for the 2015 50-over World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The tournament has been reorganized after the ICCs earlier decision of making it a 10 Test-playing nation event was criticized by associate and affiliate teams, according to reports. The new system, which will include four associate members, was decided after a Chief Executives Committee meeting in London.
The CEC adopted an ICC Development Committee proposal that a new 50-over League be introduced which will serve as the qualifying program for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, the ICC said in a statement.
The top two teams in eight team 50-over League will qualify automatically for ICC Cricket World Cup and the remainder of teams will be joined by teams finishing third and fourth in Pepsi World Cricket League Division 2 (top two teams will compete in new League) to decide the remaining two qualifiers. The event will take place at a venue and on a date still to be decided, it added.

Indian fast bowlers not eating right: Holding

LONDON: Fast-bowling legend Michael Holding has claimed that the Indian team will continue its present form in test cricket until it unearths a few good fast bowlers.
“Champion teams have always had good fast bowlers. You can’t win Test matches or remain on top without real pacers. If you look at history, you will find that the top teams of different era had top fast bowlers,” the West great Holding told TOI during the India-England fourth one-dayer at Lord’s.
Holding pinpointed the problem as a lack of ‘appetite’ to bowl fast, referring to not only the diet of the Indian bowlers but also the passion which is required to be a genuine tearaway.
“The Indian team did well in Test matches in the recent past because they had a quality bowler in Zaheer Khan. He is missing and so the team is struggling. You have to generate some pace to make it count. Otherwise you can’t dominate world cricket like the way the West Indies and the Australian teams did in the past,” he added.
He said consistency was a major issue for the Indian fast bowlers.
“When they join the team, they come with a lot of reputation. But by the time they have played two to three years of international cricket, they lose the appetite to bowl fast. Munaf Patel is the prime example. When he burst on the scene, he was a tearaway fast bowler but after a few years, he lost his pace and is currently know for his good line and length.
“When I saw Ishant Sharma in Australia in his debut series, I was very excited with the way he bowled there. But after two years, he is not the same bowler. He has lost a bit of pace. I was surprised but I have understood what is happening with the Indian bowlers. They are unable to take care of their diet and that affects their body in the long run,” Holding said.
“There is nothing wrong with their technique. If you don’t take care of what you are eating, then you are bound to lose your strength.”
Holding, however, asserted: “If Pakistan can produce fast bowlers, why can’t India?”
He also took a swipe at the IPL and the BCCI by saying, “Injuries to some of the key players were a big blow to the Indian team. But how come they never miss the IPL with injuries?”

Cook and Trott win main ICC awards

LONDON: England batsmen Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott were named respectively Test player of the year and player of the year at a ceremony hosted by the sport's governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday.

Cook, the 26-year-old opener who was appointed one day captain after the World Cup this year - shone during the year peaking with a masterly 294 in the third Test victory over India in August, though, that fell outside the time frame for the award.

It was his third Test century in six matches and 19th in all and is now just three shy of England's all-time record Test century total.

It represents quite a turnaround in the genial Cook's fortunes as a year ago he was close to being dropped before reviving his career with a hundred against Pakistan at The Oval.

It proved to be the springboard for a triumphant tour of Australia where he scored 766 runs, including three centuries, as England won the Ashes 3-1.

During the performance period, he played 12 Tests and in 18 innings, he compiled 1,302 runs at an average of 51.74, including six centuries and four half-centuries.

His highest score of 235 not out against Australia at Brisbane helped his team towards series victory as it won the Ashes away from home for the first time since the 1986-87 season.

The independent voting academy of 25 cricket experts put Cook first, ahead of an impressive group of players that had been short-listed, including England team-mates Trott and James Anderson, as well as Jacques Kallis of South Africa, who previously won this award in 2005.

The ICC later named Trott as their cricketer of the year.

Trott, who alongside Cook was a bedrock of England's victory in Australia last winter with 445 runs, took the award ahead of fellow short-list nominees Sachin Tendulkar and Hashim Amla.

‘Djokovic is having the greatest year in the history of tennis,’ says McEnroe

London, Sep 14: American legend John McEnroe has hailed World No. 1 Novak Djokovic after the Serbian defeated Rafael Nadal to in the US Open men's singles title and become just the sixth in the open era to win three Slams in the same calendar year.
It was also the 24-year-old's 64th win of a remarkable season that has seen him lose just two matches and win 10 titles which includes victories in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade, Madrid, Rome and Montreal as well as his three Slams.
"Djokovic is having the greatest year in the history of our sport, there's no doubt about it. He bewildered Nadal," the Guardian quoted McEnroe, as saying.
"I've never seen Nadal look as if he doesn't know what to do - and even on clay in Rome Djokovic made him look like that."
"Wimbledon was where he separated himself and took himself to a whole new level. He beat Nadal six times in one year and, considering the year Nadal had in 2010, that's pretty hard to do," he added.
Djokovic also has four wins against just one loss to World No. 3 Roger Federer and two wins and one defeat against World No. 4 Andy Murray.

Champions League: Barcelona held by Milan, Arsenal by Dortmund

London, Sep 14: Defending champions Barcelona were stunned by a goal by A. C. Milan within seconds of kick-off and another in stoppage time of their opening Group H Champions League game which ended in a 2-2 draw Tuesday.
Struggling English Premier club Arsenal, too, were surprised by a late goal in their 1-1 split verdict against Borussia Dortmund in Group F while another English side Chelsea won their match against Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in Group E.
Alexandre Pato scored the first Milan goal and as Pedro Rodriguez and David Villa struck a goal each Barcelona looked in control of the game till a Thiago Silva header gave Milan a point.
Robin van Persie's first-half goal for Arsenal looked secure till a Ivan Perisic volley tied the score.
Chelsea's new manager Andre Villas-Boas saw his side win comfortably, his former club Porto rallied to beat nine-man Shaktar Donetsk 2-1 in Group G.
Barcelona have won the Champions League twice in three years, while Porto took the Europa League honours last season.
Barcelona is seen as world soccer's superpower and coach Pep Guardiola's boys are favourites to win Europe's premier club championship for the fifth time.
Injured Zlatan Ibroahimovic and Robinho were missing from the Milan line-up and yet the Italian side fought it out to share points at the Nou Camp. A goal in only 24 seconds as Pato coolly slipped the ball past goalkeeper Victor Valdes put them on top.
Lionel Messi provided the opening for the Spanish champions to tie the score, Pedro Rodriguez scoring in the 36th minute.
Five minutes into the second half, Villa's long-range free kick curled into the net put Barcelona ahead.
Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said his side could have played better after the lead. "I am happy the team did not collapse until we found the late equaliser," he said.
The equaliser came when Thiago jumped high to meet Clarence Seedorf's corner.
"In the Champions League, teams can create goals out of nothing against you and you can end up with egg on your face as was the case tonight," UEFA website quoted Barcelona winger Daniel Alves as saying.
"We played a great game but we didn't kill it off and we saw the consequences against a great rival," he added.
All four teams in Group H are on one point after BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plzen tied 1-1.
In Germany, Arsenal went ahead just before halftime when Van Persie seized the ball from Sebastian Kehl and after a one-two with Theo Walcott shot past Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller.
In the closing minutes, Marcel Schmelzer's free kick was only partially cleared by Kieran Gibbs and Ivan Perisic charged in to volley home the equaliser.
The draw enabled Marseille to go to the top of the group with Lucho Gonzalez's lone goal against Olympiakos.
The Argentine cashed in on a chink in the Greek defence to reach Jeremy Morel's cross and beat his former River Plate teammate Franco Costanzo in the Olympiakos goal.
At Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres is still searching for a goal, but he set up both the Chelsea goals.
David Luiz latched onto Torres' layoff before beauty found the bottom corner of the net midway through the second session.
Then Torres ran down the left flank and all Juan Mata had to do was to give his effort a finishing touch and with it the game ended.
Chelsea are at the top of Group E after Racing Genk drew 0-0 with Valencia in the other group match.
In Group G both games resulted in 2-1 victories.
Porto goalkeeper Helton gifted Shakhtar the lead in the 12th minute as he could not collect a weak shot from outside the area by Williams and as he dropped the ball, Luiz Adriano was there to tap it in.
By the 30th minute, Hulk equalised for Porto from a free kick, and James Rodriguez's cross saw Kleber slot home the winner six minutes after halftime.
For APOEL Nicosia it was a first-ever Champions League victory. Second-half goals from Gustavo Manduca and Ailton gave them a 2-1 win over Zenit St. Petersburg.

Wenger fears English teams cannot rival Barcelona or Real Madrid

London, Sep. 13  : None of England''s Champions League clubs can match Barcelona or Real Madrid, feels Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
Speaking ahead of his club's Group F match against Dortmund, The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying: "Two teams are above the rest this season, Real Madrid and Barcelona. The rest have to catch up during the season."
"The competition inside our country has become harder. And outside, Barcelona and Real Madrid have much more financial power. For us, it''s a new start because we are a new squad. And what is at stake during the group stages for us is to show that we can go through," he added.
"They have shown they can win it so, at the moment, it''s too early to compare us to them. And it''s a bit early to compare Manchester City with Barca.
