Afghanistan Cricket Board express concern over touring dengue-ridden Lahore

Lahore, Sept 16 : The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has expressed concern over the Afghan team scheduled visit to dengue-ridden Lahore to take part in Pakistan’s National Twenty20 Championship. The event, featuring 13 regional teams along with Afghanistan, is expected to attract a full house at the Gaddafi Stadium, situated in an area declared to be a risk for the deadly disease.
The Punjab Government has also declared an emergency situation to deal with the dengue menace that has affected over 4,000 in the province.
“It’s a concern not just for us but also for the other teams. We are getting updates through media reports and it appears that the situation is not good,” The Express Tribune quoted ACB Marketing and Media Director Tariq Naeem, as saying.
He suggested putting off the event, in case the situation in Lahore, where over 3,000 people have been infected with the deadly virus, remains the same.
“Obviously the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) itself is monitoring the situation very closely, but we will decide in a couple of days,” Naeem said.
“As far as what the situation is right now, I can only suggest postponing it in the best interest of the public and the players, but we will still wait for the hosts to make the final decision,” he added.
Meanwhile, the PCB has declined the Karachi City Cricket Association’s request to arrange for their practice sessions in Lahore.

Pak’s ''''risky'''' decision to rest key pacers for Zimbabwe tour paid off: Mohsin

Karachi, Sept 16 : Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Selector Mohsin Khan has said that the decision to rest fast bowlers Umer Gul and Wahab Riaz and inject new talent, including fast bowler Aizaz Cheema and leg-spinner Yasir Shah, into the team for the Zimbabwe tour has paid dividends. The team, featuring new faces, whitewashed Zimbabwe in the three-match one-dayers after winning the one-off Test.
Mohsin felt exonerated since it never was an easy task to attain such results against a resurgent Zimbabwe, who were enjoying an excellent run after defeating Bangladesh.
“If I’ll say I was not afraid that the decision would bounce, I’d be wrong. There were some fears because we took a risk, but they were taken with honesty in the team interest,” The Express Tribune quoted Mohsin, as saying.
“We wanted to test new faces to form a back-up pool, which is my prime objective since I took over as the chief selector,” he pointed out, adding, “Today, I can say we have back-up of players in nearly every department.”
Talking about the chance they took over a tricky opposition, Mohsin said, “We never took Zimbabwe as weak opponents, but at some point, we had to take chances to give new players opportunities ahead of the tough series against Sri Lanka and England.”
Mohsin said that the tour has so far been successful for Pakistan, adding that the team''''s “splendid performance” against Zimbabwe “deserves applause”.
The chief selector, however, warned the team of complacency in the Twenty20s, noting that Zimbabwe had the ability to bounce back.
“It [Twenty20 series] will be a different ball game,” he said. “The Pakistan team would have to work hard to beat the hosts because in this format, any team can win.”

LONDON: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt has yet again hit headlines for the wrong reasons after he expressed his displeasure over the ICC ODI team of the year in which only one Pakistani player Umar Gul found a place.
According to reports filtering in from the ceremony, Ijaz was so upset with the composition of ICC ODI team of the year announced during Annual Awards function in London on Monday, that he directly pointed fingers at former West Indian captain Clive Lloyd, the chairman of the jury that finalised the side.
“The PCB chief waited for the media to talk of Lloyd to discuss the announcement of the ICC ODI team and as soon as the conference started, he raised his hand and said he wanted to ask a question as well,” the reports said.
Addressing Lloyd directly, Ijaz said that he was disappointed to see only one Pakistani cricketer finding a place in the team whereas other players from the nation had also done well in ODIs and should have been considered.
“Lloyd explained that number of deserving performers were not in the team because the jury while selecting the team had to focus on the balance of the side and could not afford to have a plethora of slow or pace bowlers,” the report said.
Sources said Ijaz was visibly upset with the omission of off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and batsman Misbah-ul-Haq, whom he felt had done enough to win spots in the ICC ODI team of the year, which otherwise included four Indians and three Sri Lankans.
The jury overlooked Wahab Riaz and Azhar Ali for the Emerging Player of the Year award and handed the honour to West Indian leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo.

PCB is wrong 90 per cent of the time: Miandad

LAHORE: Lamenting the lack of required power to work right from his day one in office as director general of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), former captain Javed Miandad on Wednesday slammed the decisions taken by the game’s authorities, claiming 90 per cent of those were erroneous.
“While closely watching the functioning of the PCB I am disappointed and feel that 90 per cent decisions [taken by the board] are wrong, and are spoiling the sport in the country. I am not part of the PCB planning only because I require power and freedom to work, since I have given 35 years to Pakistan cricket and earned a good name,” Miandad said while talking to Dawn on Wednesday.
“People around the world regard my services as a cricketer but the PCB doesn’t want to give me authority to improve [Pakistan] cricket,” the 54-year-old Miandad remarked.
“I have already brought this matter into the notice of PCB patron, President Asif Ali Zardari. Soon I will meet him again to apprise him of the poor condition of cricket in Pakistan. I will request him to either take necessary steps [to improve cricketing matters] or allow me to leave the DG post,” stated Miandad, who has been criticised for not leaving the position despite receiving the cold shoulder from the PCB right from day one.
The primary cause of friction between PCB chairman Ijaz Butt and Miandad from day one has been that the former is not ready to give latter the appropriate power to work, while the latter is not keen to operate without the authority he demands.
“The PCB did not even follow the instructions of President Zardari which he had given to the board last time on my suggestions,” lamented Miandad who featured in 124 Tests and 233 One-day Internationals for Pakistan.
Though Miandad avoided pinpointing wrong decisions of the PCB, sources said, he was not happy after the board didn’t take his advice on the appointment of new coach for the Pakistan team following Waqar Younis’s announcement to quit as national head coach after the ongoing Zimbabwe tour.
While former Test cricketers Zaheer Abbas and Ramiz Raja (both not employed by the PCB), are part of the coach-searching committee, Miandad has not been given any role in this regard.
Miandad, who has had three stints as national coach in the past, also didn’t feel delighted after the PCB decided to give former Test leg-spinner Abdul Qadir the responsibility to control club cricket. Miandad, sources said, held the view that holding club cricket was the prime duty of regional and district bodies.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s ace tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has dropped five places in the ATP rankings after his semi-final loss at the 2011 US Open.
Qureshi is now ranked 15th in the doubles individual rankings while Indian partner Rohan Bopanna is at no. 14. Together, the Indo-Pak Express is ranked at no. 7 in the new ATP rankings.
Mike and Bob Bryan of the US continue their dominance of men’s doubles tennis and lead the rankings.

Pakistan’s ACT performance will put pressure on seniors: Junaid

KARACHI: Pakistan’s national hockey team manager Khawaja Junaid said on Tuesday that he was not ruling out the comeback of senior players into the national team provided they proved their form and fitness in the camp.
“Good performance from the younger players in the recent Asian Champions Trophy has created more competition and seniors will have to prove their form and fitness to make a comeback into the team,” he said in an interview on Wednesday upon his return from Ordos, China.
Selection committee headed by ex-Olympian Hanif Khan rested veteran players like goalkeeper Salman Akbar, penalty-corner expert Sohail Abbas and forward Rehan Butt for the ACT and yet Pakistan managed to reach the final of the high-profile event which was decided on penalty-shootout.
“I will present my viewpoint and feedback to the selection committee and the PHF and it is upto them to decide the future of the seniors,” Junaid commented.
“But one thing is clear that now the seniors will have to fight for their places in the team because the youngsters have shown their potential in the event. It now creates more competition among the players for the London Olympics squad,” he stressed.
Coach Junaid described the loss in the final “as sheer bad luck” and said the boys put up a great show. Commenting on the wasted penalty-corners in the regulation time, he admitted that it was unfortunate that the Pakistanis could not get the best out of the corners which came their way.
Junaid said while Shakeel Abbasi and Haseem Khan were outstanding among the forwards, teenagers Ali Shan, and Umer Bhutta showed the spark upfront.
Responding to a question about former Pakistan captain and centre-half Waseem Ahmed, he said he had a good tournament plus young guns Muhammad Rizwan, Kashif Shah and Tausiq also proved their worth. He dispelled the impressions that Pakistan midfield and defence was weak.
The coach expressed hope that Pakistan will be able to develop a pool of players before the next year’s Olympic Games and added that the team’s next assignment in Australia, where they will appear in a 3-nation event in October, will further help the young guns to establish themseveles.

Pakistan thrash Maldives 4-0 in AFC U-16 opener

KARACHI: Pakistan teenagers got off to a great start in Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Football Championship qualifying rounds as they thrashed Maldives 4-0 in the opening match at Ali Al Sabah Stadium, Kuwait City under lights on Tuesday.

Pakistan boys maintained their fine run after winning the SAFF U-16 Championship victory as they torn apart Maldives defence.

According to report received from Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), Pakistan took the lead after 13 minutes when Muhammad Bilal scored off a well-placed pass from star striker Mansoor Khan. Bilal's shot hit the post and went in as Pakistan went 1-0 up.

Three minutes later, Mansoor got his name on the scoresheet when his well-placed shot just inside the box found the net as Maldives defence were in complete disarray.

At half-time, Pakistan looked comfortable 2-0. In 63rd minute, a Mansoor Khan cross found the head of Bilal, who flicked it on for impressive winger Sher Ali who finished with aplomb as Pakistan went 3-0 up and took the game well beyond the reach of Maldives. Midfielder Raza Ali then made it 4-0 when his 20 yard shot flew past the goalkeeper three minutes later as Pakistan ended the game with a dominating performance over their fellow SAFF rivals.

In other games of the group, Yemen was held 1-1 by UAE, Kuwait came from behind to draw Afghanistan 1-1 earlier in the day to avoid a humiliating loss. The results mean that Pakistan is currently on top in Group B with three points. Pakistan now faces hosts Kuwait in next game on Thursday.

HARARE: Pakistan won the one day international series against Zimbabwe with a 3-0 whitewash by taking the closing match with 28 runs to spare at Harare Sports Club here Wednesday.

Pakistan, having been put into bat by the hosts captain Brendan Taylor, set a target of 270-5 with Zimbabwe making 242-9 in reply.

Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq said afterwards that Pakistan's policy of sending out a young and relatively inexperienced team had paid off and he was delighted with their overall performances.

He said: "This is all a good sign for the future of Pakistan cricket and from that viewpoint alone it was worth coming."

Pakistan, who had scrambled to a five run win in the opening match and took the second by 10 wickets, were always the dominant side.

Zimbabwe put up a strong showing, their failing being continually behind the required run rate.

Pakistan got off to a spirited start through Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Farhat, who sped to 32 runs in the first three overs. The innings settled after that, especially when Harfeez fell for 23 and Farhat for 37.

The run rate settled on about five an over, even though Asad Shafiq, one of three young players introduced scored 51 and the old campaigner Younis Khan made 81. It was Shafiq's fifth half century and Khan's 44th. Khan was out to a wonderful caught and bowled by Kyle Jarvis just when he had his sights on a seventh ODI century.

Shoaib Malik once again disappointed with 14 and the finishing touches were aggressively applied to the Pakistan innings by Misbah ul Haq, 29, and Adnan Akmal with 24.

Their target, stated before the match by Misbah ul Haq to be 270 to 280 was therefore satisfactory, and seemed on the recent form of Zimbabwe to be well beyond the home team's reach.

However Zimbabwe made a serious effort to get there. But even though Justice Chibhabha with 62 and Vusi Sibanda on 59 made a strong early showing, it didn't have the pace of run gathering necessary for a launch towards the end.

With Taylor failing by scoring only six, those who followed made an effort to catch up with a rising run rate necessary but were never really in the chase, and at the end Zimbabwe needed eight, ten and eventually 14 an over for the win.

Aziz Cheema was the best of the Pakistan bowlers with 4-43 and he was named man of the match. He has been the newcomer with the most success even though he is somewhat of a latecomer at 32 years of age.

Man of the series was Younis Khan, who went about his business with polished calm and took the catch of the match on the boundary in dismissing Tatenda Taibu, who had just previously hit six, one of six scored on the day.

The Pakistan tour continues here with two Twenty-20 entertainments at Harare on Friday and Sunday.

PCB considering Moin Khan, Aaqib Javed, Sabih Azhar for head coach position: Pak daily

Islamabad, Sept 14: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering the names of Moin Khan, Aaqib Javed and Sabih Azhar to succeed outgoing head coach Waqar Younis, a Pakistani newspaper has said, attributing to sources.
Aaqib Javed has been associated with the PCB in some capacity since long, but appointing him as coach will serve no purpose to the board or the players, as he lacks basic coaching methods, The Nation said in a report.
Same is the case with Moin Khan, who has no previous experience of even club level coaching, the paper said, adding that he can be a disaster for the team, if given the chance of coaching the national side.
The PCB must hire his services as a backroom staff member and groom him for future assignment, it suggested.
Sabih Azhar, who is the Rawalpindi Rams coach, is the most suitable person among all these above mentioned persons, as he is highly qualified and done coaching courses both at national and international levels, the paper said.
It noted that Sabih has the experience of coaching different club sides and has also won national tournaments with different regions.
If given a chance, Sabih can produce desired results and can do the job for longer period, as he has the complete knowledge of club level cricket and had travelled to different parts of the country during his coaching assignments, said the paper.

Kaneria lauds England coach Andy Flower''s “great cricketing brain”

Islamabad, Sept 14: Pakistani leg spinner Danish Kaneria has paid tribute to his former Essex team mate and current England coach Andy Flower for his leadership and man management skills.
Kaneria noted the key role played by Flower in continuing success of England, which proudly sits at the top of the cricketing ladder after a one-sided series against India.
"Andy was a great man to have in the dressing room. He was the sort of guy that gave everyone confidence and a massive boost in the changing room. When things weren''t going well, Andy would rally the troops. He wasn''t one to rant and rave in the dressing room, rather he would be constructive and offer his opinions in a thoughtful and intellectual manner," PakPassion. net quoted Kaneria, as saying.
"When Andy spoke, everyone listened and his thoughts and ideas were always valued. It seems that he has continued that method as coach of England and it is paying dividends," he added.
Kaneria, who has spent several successful seasons at Essex, is not at all surprised that England, with Flower at the helm, is at the top of the test rankings.
"Andy is a very intelligent man. When I played alongside him at Essex, it was clear to me that he had a great cricketing brain and I knew he would make a very good coach. As a player, he would spot things that would make you sit up and take note and realise just what excellent knowledge of the game he had," Kaneria recalled.
"I knew that he would make a great coach and he''s doing a fantastic job with England. The best thing about Andy and why I realised he would make a good coach was that he listened, listened very carefully to every word that was spoken. He took on board everything that was discussed and would give everyone the opportunity to make their point," he added.
The 30-year-old spinner sent out a warning to the rest of the cricketing nations that it would be difficult to remove England, under Flower, from the top of the test rankings.
"Flower will ensure that everyone around him retains focus and keeps their mind very much on the cricket. He won''t let the guys around him relax and take it easy, Andy will ensure that the England players don''t get complacent and it''s going to be very difficult for any of the other teams to remove England from the number one spot in the test rankings," said Kaneria.

Aleem Dar says he relies on his ‘natural abilities’ while making umpiring decisions

Lahore, Sept 14: Pakistan's award-winning umpire Aleem Dar has said that although the probability of making mistakes exists, he relies on his natural ability rather than technology while making umpiring decisions.
Dar, 43, was voted the ICC Umpire of the Year for the third time in a row, based on his decision statistics and officiating skills over the past 12 months.
"It's all about how you cope with pressure on the field. Decision-making is always tough because there is pressure from every corner. You need to control your nerves, especially with the advent of technology," The Express Tribune quoted Dar, as saying from London.
"But despite all that, I don't get intimidated and keep a cool head because I'm there for a reason and the reason it to make a correct decision quickly," he added.
Dar beat off strong competition from his colleagues on the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires Steve Davis, Ian Gould and five-time ICC Umpire of the Year Simon Taufel.
"Although I am human and that means the probability of making mistakes exists as well, technology has already made its way into the game to correct those mistakes and that makes it helpful for the sport. However, I rely on my natural ability and the results are there for you to see," said Dar.
He ruled out stepping down from the game anytime soon, saying that he could officiate for another 20 years, but added that he would call it quits when he reaches his half-century.
"I won't wait until I can no longer umpire and deliver correct results, but will keep my and my country's respect and part my way with the role before the ICC is forced to sideline me based on performance," Dar maintained.

Wahab Riaz aims to become a genuine all-rounder for Pakistan

Islamabad, Sep 12: Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz reckons that he can be considered as a genuine all-rounder for the national team in the future.
"Definitely. In order to become an all-rounder, I feel I have the ability and can contribute with the bat. At this point though, I still need to focus a little bit more when batting and improve my concentration. I have been working hard to improve," PakPassion. net quoted Riaz, as saying.
"Also, concerning my batting, the coaches at Kent have helped me a lot so when I play for Pakistan next time around, I will be a different batsman," he added.
He further said that Pakistan coach Waqar Younis and former captain Wasim Akram have helped him develop as a fast bowler.
"Waqar has supported me a lot. He's always been very helpful and told me that whatever your basics are, try to bowl in relation to this and other things will come with time. Also, Wasim told me that when my inswinger develops further, I will become a very different bowler to what I am at the moment," Riaz said.
"That's why, I have been working very hard to develop the inswinging delivery and it is coming along. While it will take some time to perfect, I know that once it is perfected I will become a better all round bowler," he added.
When asked which batsman does he rate as the world's best, the 26-year-old said: "It's difficult to single out one batsman. From Australia, I would have to say Ricky Ponting. From India, of course Sachin Tendulkar is a great batsman and then there are also Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. All are great batsmen."

‘Cash-strapped’ PCB opts against using UDRS in Test series against Sri Lanka, England

Islamabad, Sep 12: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided against using the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) in the Test series against Sri Lanka and England, which will be played in the United Arab Emirates.
The technology will, however, be in place for the ODI and Twenty20 matches.
PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad said that the technology would not be used due to the high costs of having it installed.
"We in principle support the use of the UDRS and want it for both Tests and ODIs, but unfortunately we couldn't reach an understanding with our broadcasters for the Tests (in the United Arab Emirates)," the Daily Times quoted Ahmad, as saying.
"We have, however, reached a understanding with a company to bear the costs for the use of the technology in the one-day matches in both series," he added.
Pakistan will play three Tests, five ODIs and Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka in October and November, and three Tests, four ODIs and two Twenty20 matches against England in January and February next year.
Ahmad further insists that the board would include the use of the UDRS when it signs a fresh contract with the broadcaster.
"When we sign our next contract for broadcasting rights we will try to ensure the broadcaster is willing to bear the costs of using the UDRS system in our series, including Tests and ODIs," he said. (ANI)

Pak cricket team likely to tour Bangladesh in December

Islamabad, Sep 12: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly agreed to tour Bangladesh for a full series in December.
According to the Daily Times, the PCB has approved a tentative itinerary sent by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the series, which will include two Tests, three ODIs and a Twenty20 match.
"Pakistan has not played Bangladesh in a bilateral series since early 2008 as it believed that the Bangladesh board had let it down on many occasions, especially by not supporting Pakistan when the World Cup matches were moved out of the country. But now things seem to have settled down," the newspaper quoted a source, as saying. (ANI)
